Why two store links cost you downloads
Your app is on two stores, so it has two URLs, and almost every place you promote it has room for one. A TikTok or Instagram bio, the button in a newsletter, a press release, a podcast mention, a poster: pick the App Store link and every Android user who taps it lands on a page they can't install from. Pick Google Play and it's the iPhone users who hit a dead end.
Posting both links doesn't fix much either:
- People tap the wrong one. Few of them go back to look for the other link.
- Desktop visitors are stuck. A journalist reading your press kit on a laptop can open the store page, but still has to get the app onto their phone.
- Your numbers are split across two links, if you can see them at all.
A smart app link replaces both with one short URL, apptap.me/yourapp, that works for everyone who opens it, whatever they're holding.
How the link sends each device to the right store
When someone opens your link, AppTap reads the device from the request before anything loads:
- iPhone and iPad go to your App Store listing.
- Android devices go to your Google Play listing.
- Computers see a small page with your app's name and icon, both store buttons and a QR code to scan with a phone.
You choose how the redirect behaves. In auto-redirect mode, phones go straight to the store, so it feels as fast as tapping the store link itself. If you'd rather people see your app first, switch to showing the page, with its store buttons, to everyone.
Two edge cases are handled for you. If one store isn't live yet, its button shows "Coming soon" instead of a broken link, and the day you add the URL, everything you've already shared starts working on that platform. And iPads whose Safari presents itself as a Mac get the desktop page, where the App Store button is one tap away.
Where to use your smart link
Anywhere a single URL has to work for everyone:
- Social bios on TikTok, Instagram, X or YouTube, where you get one link. See how to put your app link in your bio.
- Ads and sponsored posts, so every placement points at the same link and you can compare them.
- Emails and newsletters: one "Download" button instead of two badges that half your readers can't use.
- Press kits and press releases, often read on a computer, where the QR code takes over.
- Print: packaging, flyers, business cards and slides. Your link comes with its own QR code, as SVG for print and PNG for screens. For any other URL, use the app QR code generator.
- Podcasts and talks, where
apptap.me/yourappis easy to say out loud and easy to remember.
Because the link stays the same when your store URLs change, you never have to reprint a code or go back and edit old posts.
Track every placement with UTM tags
Add UTM parameters to tell your placements apart:
apptap.me/yourapp?utm_source=tiktok&utm_medium=bio&utm_campaign=launch
AppTap records each visit with its device, OS, country, referrer and UTM campaign, and counts taps on the store buttons. Your stats show which bio, newsletter or poster actually sends people to the stores. The UTM tags are recorded by AppTap and aren't passed on to the App Store or Google Play, so don't look for them in the stores' own dashboards.
Keep the naming simple and consistent: lowercase, and the same source names every time (tiktok, never TikTok one week and tt the next). And remember what's being measured: a smart link counts visits and store taps, not installs. Installs are reported by App Store Connect and Play Console.
What a smart link doesn't do
A smart link gets people to your store listing. It isn't a deep linking or attribution tool, and it's worth knowing the limits before you plan a campaign around it:
- It doesn't open your app. If the app is already installed, the visitor lands on the store listing, which shows an "Open" button. Opening a specific screen needs universal links (iOS) or App Links (Android), set up in your app and on a domain you own.
- No deferred deep linking. A new user can't be taken to a particular screen after installing.
- No install attribution. There's no SDK in your app, so AppTap can't tell you which visit turned into an install.
- No custom domain. Links live on
apptap.me.
For the other ways to share one link, from a download page on your own site to the edge cases of device detection, read the guide to one link for an iOS and Android app. When you're ready, claim your link: paste a store URL and AppTap fetches your app's name and icon. It's free for one app.
